Foley
Foley is the craft of recreating everyday sounds in sync with the picture: footsteps, clothing rustle, doors, keys, cups set on tables. Foley artists perform these sounds on a stage while watching the film.
Foley matters because production sound focuses on dialogue, and many natural sounds aren't captured cleanly on set. Foley also supplies the separate effects tracks distributors often require for foreign-language versions, which makes it part of a film's deliverables.
