Chain of Title
Chain of title is the paper trail showing who owns a screenplay or film and how they came to own it — from the original author through every option, purchase, assignment, and collaborator agreement. It answers one question that every financier, insurer, and distributor asks: does this person actually have the right to sell this?
Typical documents include proof of authorship, co-writer agreements, option agreements or purchase agreements for underlying material, and any reversion paperwork from expired deals.
Gaps in the chain can stop financing and distribution entirely, and errors and omissions insurance carriers review it before issuing a policy. See chain of title: why producers ask first for a practical overview. This is general information, not legal advice.
