Character Arc

A character arc is the internal journey a character takes from the first page to the last: a false belief abandoned, a fear confronted, or a surface want replaced by a deeper need. The plot is what happens; the arc is what it costs the character and what it changes in them.

Strong arcs share a few traits:

  • A clear starting flaw established early.
  • Obstacles that pressure that flaw specifically, not just the character's skills.
  • A decisive choice under pressure that proves the change.
  • An ending that shows the new self in action.

"The character doesn't change" is one of the most common coverage notes. Our breakdown of character arc notes explains the four patterns behind it and how to fix each.
